CVE-2025-0215: Reflected Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability in UpdraftPlus WordPress Plugin

CVE-2025-0215 is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability identified in the UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin for WordPress. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts by exploiting insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in specific parameters.

The vulnerability arises from improper handling of user-supplied input in the showdata and initiate_restore parameters. An attacker can craft a malicious URL containing script code within these parameters. If an authenticated administrator clicks on the link, the injected script executes with the administrator’s privileges, potentially leading to site compromise.

All versions of the UpdraftPlus plugin up to and including 1.24.12 are affected by this vulnerability. Websites utilizing these versions are at risk, especially if administrators are not cautious about clicking on unsolicited links.

Mitigation and Remediation for CVE-2025-0215

To mitigate this vulnerability:

  1. Update the Plugin: Upgrade to the latest version of UpdraftPlus, where the issue has been addressed.

  2. Implement Security Plugins: Consider using security plugins that provide additional XSS protection.

  3. Educate Administrators: Inform site administrators about the risks of clicking on unsolicited links and the importance of verifying URLs before interaction.

For detailed information and updates, refer to the official UpdraftPlus website and the WordPress plugin repository.

Impact of Successful Exploitation of CVE-2025-0215

  • Execute Arbitrary Scripts: Run malicious scripts in the context of an administrator’s session.

  • Compromise Site Integrity: Alter website content, inject malware, or redirect users to malicious sites.

  • Steal Sensitive Information: Harvest administrator credentials or other confidential data.

The severity of this vulnerability is underscored by its potential to facilitate full site compromise.
